Then again, doing that reduces Cadence of Hyrule into a mediocre action game.
Once you fight the harder foes or get mobbed by a gaggle of baddies, however, it’s quite possible to see your sense of rhythm crumble as you desperately try to stay alive.įolks who are struggling can turn off the rhythm requirement by picking Fixed Beat Mode. It’s easy to follow a rhythm when going against an easy foe or a few enemies. Granted, the enemies will try to mess up your timing as best as they can. This makes it less likely that you will miss a combo and have to restart your chain once again. Honestly, you’ll want to be doing something, even if it’s just shuffling back and forth in place as this gets you acclimated to the beat that you need to follow. Note that each beat of the music counts as a turn of sorts so even when you’re not moving, your foes are going to be doing their thing. These include bonuses to attacks and other actions that you perform.Īs such, you will want to be in tune with whatever rhythm is playing at the moment. Even simple movement must be done to the beat as being one with the game’s sense of rhythm grants you benefits that boost your performance. This isn’t limited to the actions you take such as attacking.
Basically, you need to move your character to the beat - literally - in order to experience the most success in Cadence of Hyrule. What kicks up the game another notch, however, is its figurative dance partner when it comes to its mechanics. The action itself is pretty basic and can even be considered underwhelming on its own. Anchoring the gameplay are Necrodancer’s mechanics, a musically-inspired action romp that’s actually more rhythm game than dancing game. Then again, while this game looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it doesn’t walk like one. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s responsible for the soundtrack of several indie darlings such as “The Binding of Isaac” and “Super Meat Boy.” Both the visuals and music work together to give Cadence of Hyrule that old-school Zelda feel that older fans pine for and love. I also appreciate the remixed Zelda tunes courtesy of Danny Baranowsky. As someone who considers “A Link to the Past” on the Super Famicom or SNES as my favorite Legend of Zelda game ever, I quite like the simple top-down 2D look that the game uses. It’s the type of unusual crossover that just works.įirst off, let me just say that I love the game’s visuals. The same can be said of Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer. Preferably made with glutinous rice and dairy.
Whoever thought up that dainty little idea deserves a medal. Sometimes, though, the things you don’t expect end up being wonderful delights.
